Baseball edged by No. 13 Johns Hopkins

AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- The Augustana Vikings baseball team saw its seven-game win streak come to an end on Saturday, falling to the No. 13 ranked Johns Hopkins Blue Jays by a final of 7-6.

After two scoreless innings, the Vikings struck first with three runs in the top of the third. Alec McGinnis brought in the first tally with a sacrifice fly, followed by a two-out,. two-run single from Dymitri Kanellakis to move the advantage out to three. Augie kept Johns Hopkins off the board for another inning, but the Blue Jays erupted for six runs in the bottom of the fourth after a pair of home runs helped switch the momentum in their favor. Hopkins led 6-3 after four complete.

Augustana responded with its second three-run frame in the ensuing at-bat. Two walks and a single put runners on every base with one out before Kanellakis cleared them with a double to left-center. Augie was unable to cash in on runners on first and third and the two teams left the fifth inning with a 6-6 tie.

Each team saw runners in scoring position in every inning the rest of the way, but the 6-6 deadlocked remained intact through eight innings of play. Augie had an opportunity to strike with a runner on second with one out in the ninth, but a double play quickly ended the scoring threat. An RBI double to deep center in the Blue Jays' next at-bat secured the 7-6 walkoff win.

The Vikings tallied nine hits in the defeat, led by Kanellakis' 3-5 effort to go with his five runs batted in. Alex Simon also added a pair of hits with two runs scored. Anthony Sus struck out six in 5.1 innings of relief.

With the loss, Augie drops to 12-4 on the season. The team will be back in action tomorrow vs. Colby.
