AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- The Augustana Vikings baseball team earned a win in game one of the RussMatt Invitational on Friday, defeating the St. Olaf Oles by a score of 7-2.
After the Oles earned a run in the top of the first to begin the contest, Augie answered with one of its own in the bottom half after a leadoff single by
Cole Green came around to score. The Vikings added two more onto their total in the second, seeing an RBI double from
Daniel Mosele before a Green single brought him home. Augie led 3-1 after two.
The early-inning success continued in the third with two more runs from the Vikings. A hit-by-pitch and consecutive passed balls put
Alex Simon on third with one out before
Dymitri Kanellakis moved him in on a single through the left side.
Charlie Bergin cashed in the second run of the frame two batters later with a run-scoring single to extend the advantage to 5-1. Kanellakis added a pair of insurance runs with his second home run of the season in the fifth.
Adam Bendoraitis earned the win on the mound after allowing just one hit through six innings.
Ethan Witzel and
Cameron Miller shut the door out of the bullpen through the final three to complete the 7-2 victory. As a team, the Vikings racked up eight hits, led by two from Kanellakis, Green, and Mosele.
With the win, Agustana improves to 12-3 on the season. The team will be back in action tomorrow morning against No. 13 Johns Hopkins.
