ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings women's lacrosse team fell to the Cornell Rams by a score of 21-5 on Saturday to begin the 2024 season.
Cornell scored six times in the opening quarter while holding Augie scoreless to hold a 6-0 lead after 15 minutes. The Rams' scoring streak followed into the second with three more goals before Madison Langewisch got the Vikings on the board with 8:18 left in the quarter. The Rams answered with another point, but Elena Bechard sent in the second goal for Augie with a woman down shortly after. Cornell secured the last two goals of the first half, going into the break with a score of 12-2.
The Vikings kicked off the third quarter with a goal from Colleen Chiavola before Langewisch got her second goal four minutes later. The Rams followed with four goals of their own to make it 16-4 heading into the final period. Taylor Ackland scored first in the fourth with a free-position shot, but Cornell secured the game's final five points to complete the 21-5 win.
Langewisch led the Vikings with two goals out of her three shots and Lanie Cecala had eight saves. Bechard also contributed four caused turnovers, four ground balls, and three draw controls.
The Vikings will be back in action March 2 against Franklin.
