ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings women's lacrosse team beat the Franklin Grizzlies on Saturday, winning by a score of 19-8 at Thorson-Lucken Field.
Madison Langewisch started the game by winning the draw control and took it right to the net to secure the first goal of the game before Colleen Chiavola made it a 2-0 score 90 seconds later. With the Vikings a woman up, Kyla Painter earned her first goal of the season with a pass from Langewisch. Franklin got on the board a minute later, but Langewisch followed with her second of the day from Anna Davison while being a woman down. With 4:53 left in the period, Chiavola sent in her second goal, followed by Elena Bechard's first of the game on a pass from Anna Erickson. Painter scored the period's final goal with a pass from Davison to make a 7-3 score after 15 minutes of action.
In a low-scoring second frame, the Grizzlies secured the first two goals before Bechard earned her second in the game to bring it to an 8-5 score. Painter scored a minute later to increase the gap back to four and Augie took a 9-5 lead into halftime.
Franklin scored first after the break until goals from Erickson and Langewisch maintained the Vikings' cushion. The Grizzlies grabbed a goal after being a woman up with 10 minutes remaining, but Bechard grabbed the final two points in the period to increase the gap to six.
In the last 15 minutes of play, Bechard secured the first three goals to begin the fourth and make it five in a row for her at the time. Davison got her first goal of the season with 5:05 remaining and Bechard notched her eighth tally of the afternoon to move the scoring difference to 10. Langewisch closed out the game with a pass from Narita Lambert to seal the 19-8 final score.
Bechard led the Vikings in the win with eight goals, which is tied for fourth-most in a single game in Augie program history. Langewisch followed with four goals, one assist, 10 ground balls, four caused turnovers, and 12 draw controls to move her over 100 career draw wins for her career. Painter also had five caused turnovers, while Chiavola had four.
With the win, Augie improves to 1-1 on the season and travels to Beloit on Thursday for its next contest.
