PEORIA, Ill. – The Augustana Vikings softball team split a pair of games at the Mount Mary Slugger Series on Thursday, defeating the Loras Duhawks by a score of 2-1 before falling to the UW-Stevens Point Pointers by a final of 8-3.
In game one against the Duhawks, the Vikings saw a deficit right away as a lead-off home run put Loras up by a run. Augie went without a hit through the first three innings until
Ashlyn Mathers connected on the team's first base knock in the fourth, but the 1-0 lead for the Duhawks remained intact after four innings of action.
Augie evened the score in the fifth after beginning the frame with a
Meghan Nixon single. After Nixon moved to second on a sacrifice bunt,
Nadia Ranieri sent the ball through the right side to bring home the equalizing score. Loras limited the damage as the two teams remained even at one run apiece.
Scoreless sixth innings ensued and the Vikings shut down the Duhawks in the top of the seventh to set up a walk-off opportunity in the bottom half. An error and a sac bunt put a runner in scoring position with one out and the top of the order due up. The Vikings brought in the game-winning run during the next at-bat, benefiting from another Loras error to seal the victory.
Augustana out-hit Loras 5-3 in the win, with all base hits coming from five different players. Ranieri earned the win on the mound for the Vikings, holding the Duhawks without a hit through the final two innings and striking out seven for the game.
Against the Pointers, the two teams played three scoreless innings before a busy fourth opened up the scoring. Stevens Point put up a six-spot in its half of the inning, but the Vikings answered with two runs in the bottom to inch closer. Ranieri hit a two-run single with two outs to make it a 6-2 game after four.
Augie added another run in the fifth thanks to a bases-loaded walk from
Olivia Blood, but the Pointers added insurance runs in the seventh to maintain their distance and hang on for the victory.
Mathers led Augustana with two hits, while
Lauren Koster struck out six on the mound. Brooke Hartzel also reached base twice in as many at-bats.
The Vikings will return to action tomorrow against Northland and Edgewood.
