Softball splits final day in Peoria

PEORIA, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings softball day went 1-1 on Friday during their final day of the Mount Mary Slugger Series, defeating the Northland Lumber Jills by a score of 10-0 before falling to the Edgewood Eagles by a score of 7-5.

After a long night that saw a game end after midnight, the Vikings were up early to face Northland at 8 a.m. Mikaylin Hofer got of our a bases-loaded jam in the first inning to keep the Jills off the board, using a double play started by Teagan Nees to escape the frame. A wild pitch and an error in the bottom half gave Augustana a 2-0 lead after one inning of action.

The Vikings added on in the bottom of the third, seeing a first career collegiate home run from Lilli Burton begin the inning to make it 3-0. Augustana broke it open in the fourth with a seven-spot to move the advantage to double figures, securing six hits on their way to a victory by run rule. McKensey Stontz fueled the scoring outburst with a two-run double to push the lead to five, followed by three runs scoring via errors. Infield singles by Hannah Waddell and Lauren Durst both brought in runs to cap off the big inning and Augie kept Northland off the board in the fifth to seal the game.

Hofer earned the win on the mound, allowing just three hits and striking out three. As a team, the Vikings tallied 10 hits, led by two apiece from Brooke Hartzell and Burton.

In the finale against Edgewood, Augie got on the board first after two scoreless innings. Nadia Ranieri brought in the game's first run with an RBI double and later scored on an error to bring the score to 2-0 after three. After Edgewood took the lead in the fourth with a four-spot, the Vikings answered with three of their own in the fifth to reclaim the lead at 5-4. An RBI fielder's choice by Marley Behm brought the team within a run before another run-scoring double from Ranieri evened things up. An RBI sac bunt from Jennica Soliz closed out the three-run frame with the Vikings out in front. Edgewood deadlocked the game at five in the sixth before pushing across two in the seventh, eventually hanging on for the 7-5 win.

For the second time on Friday, Augustana tallied 10 hits, led by Ranieri and Soliz with three each.

Augie now sits at 2-2 on the season and will be back in action on March 9 for a home doubleheader against St. Ambrose.
