Strong defensive showing lifts Vikings to first win over Cardinals since 2011

ROCK ISLAND --  The Augustana Vikings men's soccer team earned its first win over the North Central Cardinals since 2011 on Wednesday, winning at home by a score of 1-0. The victory snapped an 11-game losing streak in the series vs. North Central.

Both teams had a strong showing on defense in the first half, with Benjamin Samuelson saving all six of the shots on target out of the Cardinals' 10 attempts. The Vikings put up five shots of their own, including two from Rayane Haidi, but both teams remained scoreless after 45 minutes of action.

Returning to the field, Haidi quickly put Augie on the scoreboard off a pass from Gonzalo Alberola just 23 seconds into the period. The Vikings defense stayed strong throughout the second half, fending off seven shots on target and 11 total attempts. Augie held North Central scoreless in the second half to take the conference win by a score of 1-0.

Samuelson notched 13 saves in his 90 minutes in goal.

With the win, Augie moves to 4-3-1 on the season and 1-2 in CCIW action. The Vikings will hit the road on Saturday, October 12 for a conference battle against Wheaton.
