Women's soccer clinches CCIW Tournament berth with win over Elmhurst

ROCK ISLAND -- For the sixth consecutive season, the Augustana Vikings women's soccer team is headed to the CCIW Tournament. Augie wrapped up the No. 6 seed in the upcoming tournament with a 3-0 victory at home over Elmhurst on Wednesday night.

It was a busy opening half as the two teams combined for 20 shots through 45 minutes of action. Nearly 28 minutes went by without a score until Liesl Whitener sent one in at 27:41 off a double assist from Paige Bingen and Caelan Cole to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead. Almost 15 minutes later, Whitener struck again right before the half and put in another tally to make it a 2-0 advantage for Augustana entering the halftime break. Abby DeGustion collected the assist on Whitener's second goal to cap off an aggressive opening period. The Vikings out-shot the Bluejays 13-7 in the first, with four of those coming on target.

The pace slowed down a little in the second as the Augie defense stepped up and allowed just one Elmhurst shot in the final 45 minutes. The Vikings added onto to their lead in the 73rd minute as DeGustino notched her second score of the season on assists from Whitener and Mary Baker. Augustana did not allow a shot attempt by the Bluejays through the final 38 minutes of action.

As a team, the Vikings held a 20-8 advantage in the shot category, led by seven from Whitener. Sara Schinker earned the shutout in net with four saves.

With the victory, Augie improves to 9-5-4 on the season and wraps up conference play with a 3-4-1 mark. The team will face No. 3 seeded Millikin on the road in the CCIW Tournament quarterfinals on Saturday beginning at 2:30 p.m.
