Women's soccer comes up short in CCIW Tournament quarterfinals

DECATUR, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings women's soccer team saw its season come to an end on Saturday in the first round of the CCIW Tournament, falling to the Millikin Big Blue by a score of 2-1.

The two teams played to a scoreless opening half, with Millikin holding a 9-4 advantage in the shots category. Liesl Whitener notched the first two attempts for the Vikings in the first 20 minutes, followed by one by Abby DeGustino and Carson Kekelik to close out the first 45 minutes of action. Sara Schinker collected three saves in the frame to keep it a 0-0 game at the break.

The Big Blue quickly broke the deadlock with a score just two minutes into the second half before adding on 10 minutes later to bring the margin out to 2-0. Whitener inched Augie closer with her 16th goal of the season in the 74th minute, hitting the back of the net on a pass from DeGustino. The Vikings kept the pressure on with four shots in the final 10 minutes, but the home team held on for the one-goal victory.

Augustana posted eight shots in the second half and was led by Whitener's seven for the game. Schinker finished with five saves in net.

The Vikings end the season with a 9-6-4 oveall record.
