BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings men's soccer team was defeated in a close battle with the Illinois Wesleyan Titans on Wednesday, falling on the road by a score of 1-0.
The home team put the pressure on the Vikings early with four shots through the first 12 minutes of action, two of which were saved by
Benjamin Samuelson. Augie put up its first two shots come consecutively moments later, seeing one each by
Luis Garcia and
Fer Cuahquentzi. The Titans broke the scoreless tie later in the frame with the first and only tally in the 35th minute. Illinois Wesleyan out-shot Augustana 13-5 through the first 45 minutes of action, with Samuleson collecting four saves in the frame.
Augustana saw better opportunities to strike in the second, posting nine shots in the half. Three of the first four attempts for the Vikings were on target, but could not get one to find the back of the net. Augie's defense held the Titans without another score, but the home team held on for the 1-0 win.
Garcia, Cuahquentzi, and
Jimmie Kucaba each had three shots to lead Augustana. Samuelson ended his night with 11 saves.
With the loss, the Vikings drop to 4-5-1 on the season and 1-4 in CCIW action. The team will return home for a non-conference matchup with Grinnell on Saturday.
