ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings women's soccer team extended their unbeaten streak to eight games Wednesday night, defeating the visiting Illinois College Lady Blues by a score of 2-1 at Thorson-Lucken Field.
The two teams saw a number of chances on each other's side of the field in the opening half, but played over 20 minutes scoreless until the Lady Blues notched the first goal of the game with a long strike into the back of the net. Augustana answered with pressure on the Illinois College side, eventually capitalizing on one of their 10 first-half shots with a score.
Carson Kekelik grabbed control of a throw-in pass and took it all the way herself before sending it into the goal to even the score at 1-1. Five minutes later, Kekelik helped cause another score for the Vikings, drawing a foul inside the box to set up a penalty-kick goal from
Maddie Feltner. Augie took a 2-1 lead into halftime after out-shooting the Lady Blues 10-5.
Augustana continued to control the ball on the visitor's side of the field in the second half, owning another big shot disparity of 11-4. A total of 12 of the team's shots were on target, half of them coming in the final 45 minutes, but neither the Vikings or Lady Blues could add another tally to the scoreboard. Augustana fended off four looks at the net from Illinois College, including two on target, to complete the 2-1 victory.
Kekelik and
Liesl Whitener led Augie in shots with six apiece, followed by two each from Feltner and
Samira Khobdeh.
Janey Castoe and
Kierstyn Rogers combined for the win in net, each securing two saves.
With the win, Augustana improves to 8-1-1 on the season. The team will dive back in to CCIW action on Saturday, September 30 when they host Carthage at Thorson-Lucken Field.
