Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Whitener's late goal lifts Vikings to win over Principia

ELSAH, Ill. -- Liesl Whitener sent in a shot to the back of the net with just under six minutes remaining to break a scoreless tie and help capture the Augustana Vikings women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over the Principia Panthers on Friday.

The two teams went without a goal the opening 45 minutes, but Augie put pressure on the home team after posting an 11-1 shot advantage through one half of action. The shot disparity continued in the second half, with the Vikings stringing together multiple scoring opportunities on 13 attempts. With 5:45 left in the game, Whitener gained control of the ball on a pass from Ximena Osorio-Rodriguez on the left side and sent one past the opposing keeper to tally the first and lone score of the evening. The senior finished with four shots, three on goal, while Carson Kekelik posted a game-high five to lead an aggressive offensive pursuit.

Janey Castoe secured her 10th career shutout in net. Principia managed just one shot that was not on target.

With the win, Augustana improves to 1-0 on the season, their second straight season-opening victory. The Vikings will remain on the road for their next contest on Sunday, September 3 when they visit the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks. Start time is scheduled for 1 p.m. from Chicago, Ill.
