Augie eliminates Loras, advances in regional bracket

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The No. 4 seeded Augustana baseball team avoided elimination and advanced in the regional round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday, defeating the No. 3 seeded Loras Duhawks 5-4.

Josh Wintroub took the mound to start the elimination game and swiftly dispatched the Loras offense in three-straight 1-2-3 innings, including a trio of strikeouts. Despite generating at least one hit and leaving one on base in each of the first three innings, Augie struggled to capitalize with runs in the early going. The Duhawks broke the scoring silence in the top of the fourth, mashing a run-scoring triple to seize a 1-0 lead. The Vikings replied in the bottom side, as Brett Benedetti hit an RBI double down the left field line to level the game at one-all. Augie captured its first lead in the fifth, thanks to a double-play by the defense in the top side of the frame. Cole Green took home on a wild pitch after advancing to third on a fielder's choice the previous play, giving the Vikings a 2-1 edge.

Augustana loaded the bases early in the sixth, giving way to a three-run flurry that began with Zachary Vrbancic earning a walk to bring in Alec McGinnis from third. The next at-bat Benedetti scored on a fielder's choice by Green before Trevor Moore reached home on a throwing error from Loras to push the advantage to 5-1. A scoreless seventh inning from both teams saw the Duhawks rear back into the game with three runs in the eighth. Loras launched a solo home run in the opening plate appearance before a two-run single moved the score to 5-4. With runners on second and third and one out, Addison Southwick entered the game and promptly ended the Duhawks' offensive surge. Southwick continued to deal in the game's final inning, striking out two of the four Loras batters he faced to advance Augustana in the regional.

Wintroub claimed the win, tossing seven innings with three runs allowed and six strikeouts. Southwick claimed his third save in the last six games while striking out two Duhawks. Augie totaled eight hits in the contest, led by McGinnis' 4-for-4 effort.

The Vikings will face the loser of UW-Stevens Point/Webster at 3:30 p.m. today for a chance to reach the regional championship game.
