Vikings end season with loss to Webster at NCAA Regional

STEVENS POINT. Wis. — The No. 4 seeded Augustana baseball team lost to the No. 2 seeded Webster Gorloks on Saturday by a score of 9-8 in their regional semifinal of the NCAA Tournament.

Augie jumped on Webster early, plating two runs in the opening inning. Alex Simon launched a double and scored the ensuing at-bat on a Webster throwing error, while Alec McGinnis ripped an RBI single through the right side to put the Vikings ahead 2-0. In the second inning, Cole Green mashed a run-scoring double to extend the lead to 3-0, but a two-RBI single from the Gorloks in the bottom side of the frame cut the advantage to one.

The Vikings' bats remained warm, with Chase Maifield launching a solo home run in the third and Alex Simon scoring on a dropped third strike in the fourth to cushion the lead back out to three. Webster found their footing in the bottom of the fourth, striking a pair of two-run home runs before a two-RBI double saw the lead flip to 8-5 in favor of the Gorloks.

After both clubs went scoreless in the fifth and sixth innings, Maifield crushed his second home run of the game in the seventh to trim the deficit to two. With an RBI single in the bottom side of the frame, Webster negated the score to move the score to 9-6. Augie attempted to rally in a must-score ninth inning. Simon's single down the right field line set up Matt Ozanic's two-run home run, bringing the Vikings within one. The comeback ultimately fell short, as three outs put an end to Augustana's tournament run.

Augie totaled 13 hits, with Maifield and Ozanic leading the way with two RBI each.

Augustana ends their historic season with a 39-9 record, 16-2 in conference play. The 39 wins marks a new program record, while the conference win total is the third-highest in team history.
