Baseball rolls over Eureka for ninth straight win

MOLINE, Ill. – The Augustana Vikings baseball team trounced the Eureka Red Devils 13-2 in seven innings on Tuesday to secure their ninth straight win.

Nathaniel Sammer got the start on the mound, getting out of an early jam with a double play and strikeout to keep the Red Devils scoreless. Augustana got on the board quickly, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning sparked by two runs from wild pitches to start. Dymitri Kanellakis drove in the third run of the inning with a single to center field, followed by a Michael Aragon RBI groundout three at-bats later to push the score to 4-0.

The Vikings carried their momentum into the second inning, launching a six-run spree with an RBI single to left center from Ozanic. Two at-bats later, Chase Maifield mashed a two-run single to right center to put Augie ahead by seven. Following a two-run single from Alec McGinnis, Cole Green hit a sacrifice fly to left field to plate Augustana's 10th score of the game. Eureka tallied their only runs of the game in the third to trim the Vikings' lead to eight.

Augie nabbed one run in each of the following three innings, beginning with Kyle Campbell scoring on a wild pitch in the bottom of the third after reaching base with a double. In the fourth, the Vikings gathered a hit by pitch, single, and back-to-back walks to plate Green from third and seize a 10-run advantage for the second time. Augustana cemented the contest's 13-2 final in the fifth as Maifield crossed home on a fielder's choice from Green. Anthony Sus earned his second win of the season, striking out seven in 3.2 scoreless innings to help capture the Vikings' ninth win this season by run rule.

Maifield, McGinnis, and Green each batted in two runs to lead Augustana's 12-hit performance. Four different Vikings tallied multi-hit efforts.

Augustana improves to 27-6 overall with the win. The Vikings will remain home for another non-conference matchup against Knox on Thursday. Start time is set for 7:00 p.m. from Swanson Stadium.
