Baseball topples Knox at home

MOLINE, Ill. – The Augustana Vikings baseball team defeated the Knox Prairie Fire 21-4 at home on Thursday to move their win streak to 10 games.

Knox scored four runs in the top of the first, placing pressure on the Augustana offense, which responded with nine runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. Alex Simon began the scoring eruption for the Vikings, belting an RBI single before a bases-loaded walk by Chase Maifield plated the Vikings' second run. Following scores in successive at-bats to level the game, Maifield scored on a wild pitch to give the Vikings the lead. Consecutive hit batters accounted for the next two runs, ending the scoring burst with a two-RBI single to right field from Kyle Campbell to push the Augustana lead to 9-4.

The Vikings continued to add on in the third, starting with Zachary Vrbancic scoring on a wild pitch two-at bats after his double down the right field line. Simon quickly followed with an RBI single before Campbell's sacrifice fly extended Augie's advantage to 12-4. The Vikings' one-run fifth inning came prior to an eight-run outburst in the sixth that put the game out of reach. Matt Ozanic drove in the first run with a sacrifice to right, while Simon and Cole Green scored on a Prairie Fire error two at-bats later to move the score to 16-4. Alec McGinnis drove in two shortly after to put the Vikings ahead by 14, with a walk bringing in the next score. Trevor Moore batted in run number 20 before Andy Shover's hit-by-pitch brought the game to its 21-4 final.

Adam Bendoraitis earned his first win of the season, allowing just one hit and striking out nine in four innings of action. The Vikings had 14 hits, with five different players collecting two, led by Campbell and McGinnis, who each had three runs batted in.

Augustana improves to 28-6 with the win, clinching their second 10-game winning streak of the season. The Vikings will return to conference play against Illinois Wesleyan with a doubleheader on Saturday. Start time for game one against the Titans is set for 1:00 p.m. from Swanson Stadium.
