BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings men's lacrosse team took on the Transylvania Pioneers in a neutral-site contest on Sunday at Illinois Wesleyan, falling by a score of 21-5.
After a Transy goal to begin the game,
Rocco Boggio notched an equalizing score three minutes later to even the score at one goal apiece. The Pioneers then erupted for seven straight tallies to pull away from the Vikings before
Elijah Graesser halted the surge with a late first-quarter score. Transylvania added two more in the opening frame to bring their advantage to 9-2 after 15 minutes of action.
The Vikings claimed momentum back in the second, out-scoring the Pioneers 3-2 before half.
Jake Moore notched the team's third goal of the contest, followed by Graesser's second of the day on a man-up opportunity. He then notched the final point of the second quarter with just over nine minutes remaining to cut the Transylvania lead to six at the break.
The Pioneers broke the game open in the third, scoring six times to Augustana's none. The Vikings were unable to find the back of the net in the fourth as they fell in the neutral-site contest by a score of 21-5.
Graesser led the Augie offense with a hat trick on a team-high 12 shots.
Jack Connolly added an assist, while four different Vikings caused multiple turnovers on the defensive end.
Zach Reser secured a team-best eight ground balls.
Erik Singdahlsen stopped 14 shots in net.
With the loss, Augustana drops to 6-9 overall and 1-4 in the CCIW. The team will close out their season on Saturday, April 29 when they welcome in the North Central Cardinals to Thorson-Lucken Field. Start time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
