Men's lacrosse falls to Carthage

ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings men's lacrosse team fell at home Wednesday, defeated by the visiting Carthage Firebirds by a score of 23-6.

Jack Connolly notched the first goal of the game for Augustana to give the Vikings the early 1-0 lead less than 90 seconds into the contest. Carthage responded six straight goals over the span of the next six minutes to flip momentum in their favor. Augie halted the scoring run with a tally from Jake Moore, but the Firebirds added two more before the end of the first period to hold an 8-2 advantage after 15 minutes of play.

The Firebirds nearly mirrored their first-quarter effort in the second, out-scoring the Vikings 7-2 in the frame on their way to a 15-4 halftime lead. Connolly secured his second score of the game with a man-up goal at the 13:08 mark of the second, followed by Brenson Brown nearly eight minutes later to round out the first-half scoring for Augustana.

After Carthage struck for the first two goals of the second half, Moore grabbed his second score of the game with another man-up tally. He then assisted on the team's final goal of the game with 1:29 left in the contest, helping Brady Holtz find the back of the net. The Firebirds added five in the third and three in the fourth while hold the Vikings to just two goals in the final 30 minutes.

Erik Singdahlsen had 11 saves in net for Augustana, while Connolly and Moore led the offensive efforts with multi-goal performances. Paul Huber caused two turnovers and picked up two ground balls.

With the loss, Augie drops to 6-8 overall and 1-3 in the CCIW. The team will step away from home for a neutral-site matchup with Transylvania on Sunday, April 23. Start time is scheduled for 12 p.m. from Bloomington, Ill. on the campus of Illinois Wesleyan.
