ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings men's lacrosse team earned a non-conference victory over the Monmouth Fighting Scots on Thursday, winning by a score of 22-3 in a rescheduled contest from earlier this month.
Augie erupted for six opening-quarter goals, jump-started by a score from
Brady Holtz nearly four minutes into the game. Minutes later,
Carson Ghys added two for the Vikings, notching goals within 32 seconds of each other to make it 3-0.
Jake Moore and
Rocco Boggio secured their first goals of the game in the first quarter, capped off by one from Holtz to close the frame with a 6-0 lead in favor of Augustana. The Vikings assisted on four of their first six goals.
After nine minutes of scoreless play to start the second, Monmouth got on the board for the first time to cut the lead to five. Augustana closed the half out with three straight goals, all from different players, to take a 9-1 advantage into halftime.
Elijah Graesser and
Brenson Brown both tallied their first scores of the contest, with Boggio grabbing his second in the period.
The Vikings enjoyed their highest scoring quarter in the third, sending in seven shots into the back of the Monmouth net. After a Graesser goal a minute in, Moore earned his second and third scores with back-to-back goals separated by just 25 seconds. Ghys and Brown grabbed the next two of the frame before Holtz rounded out the seven-goal outburst with consecutive tallies himself. Augustana saw two goals in the fourth from Boggio and
Graham Shap to close the win out by its 22-3 score.
Augustana out-shot Monmouth 60-21 in the win and was led Holtz with six goals. Four others in Brown, Ghys, Boggio, and Moore secured hat tricks, while Ghys was the game's assist leader with five.
Caiden McCann had seven caused turnovers to highlight the Augie defense.Â
With the win, the Vikings improve to 5-4 on the year. The team will open CCIW play on Wednesday, April 5 when they visit the Elmhurst Bluejays. Start time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. from Elmhurst, Ill.
