WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Augustana baseball won their second contest of a three-game series against St. Olaf on Tuesday, defeating the Oles 16-6 in seven innings.
The Oles nabbed two runs in the top of the first before Augie's offense answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning to seize the lead. The scoring began with an Alex Simon RBI triple ahead of Kyle Campbell bringing him in with a single the next at-bat. A fielder's choice broke the 2-2 tie prior to back-to-back run-producing doubles from Ethan Sosnowski and Alec McGinnis to cap off the five-run frame. St. Olaf added two runs in the second to trim the deficit to 5-4.
Augustana and St. Olaf exchanged a run over the third and fourth innings to bring the score to 6-5 heading into a busy fifth. The Oles evened the score in their half of the inning, but were met with four from the Vikings in their ensuing at-bat. The Vikings broke the deadlock beginning with a two-run double from Zachary Vrbancic, followed by a two-RBI single by Cole Green.
McGinnis' successful sac fly attempt in the sixth resulted in the inning's first of four runs before Green tripled to bring in Vrbancic and Sosnowski. Green later came in to score on a passed ball to make it two innings in a row with four runs tallied. Augie added their final two runs in the bottom of the seventh after McGinnis drilled his second sac fly of the game and Vrbancic delivered an RBI single to walk off the Oles by run rule.
Addison Southwick earned the win after tossing 5.1 innings in relief and striking out four Oles. The Vikings secured 14 hits as a team, with Sosnowski and McGinnis leading the way with three apiece. Cole led the team with four runs batted in, while McGinnis and Vrbancic each had three.
The Vikings improve to 15-3 with the win and will remain in Winter Haven for their final matchup against St. Olaf on Wednesday, March 29. The neutral-site battle begins at 8:00 a.m. CDT from Chain O'Lakes Complex.
