ROCK ISLAND – The Augustana Vikings women's lacrosse team fell at home to the Marian Sabres on Saturday by a 16-6 final.
While down by one score at 11:49 in the first period, Cassidy Petrie found the 1-1 equalizer with an unassisted strike. Marian seized the lead back with four straight goals before the Vikings' offense responded with four unanswered goals of their own to knot the game at 5-5. Elena Bechard scored twice in that span, while Madison Langewisch and Petrie also netted goals. The Sabres tacked on a score to enter the break with a one-point edge.
After a Marian goal to open the third period, Claire Kim sent in the lone Augie goal of the second half to cut the deficit to one. The Sabres scored nine unanswered goals the rest of the way to secure a 16-6 road triumph.
Bechard and Petrie led the Vikings' scoring attack with two scores apiece, while Kim and Langewisch each contributed one. Augie caused 12 turnovers, paced by Narita Lambert with three. The Vikings' grabbed 26 ground balls as a team, with Kyla Painter securing eight for a season-high. Rachel Forman had eight saves in 60 minutes of action.
The Vikings move to 3-3 on the season with the loss. The team will hit the road for the first time in nearly a month with a non-conference bout against Spalding in Louisville, Ky. on Tuesday, March 28. Start time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. CDT from the Spalding Athletic Complex.
