Women's lacrosse topples Monmouth at home

ROCK ISLAND – The Augustana Vikings women's lacrosse team defeated the Monmouth Fighting Scots on Wednesday by an 18-1 final.

Augie struck first with an Elena Bechard free position strike at 10:55 in the opening period. The Fighting Scots answered 30 seconds later with their lone goal of the contest to knot the game at one apiece. Bechard scored again before Madison Langewisch's goal with 54 seconds remaining extended the Vikings' lead to 3-1 at the end of the first quarter.

Langewisch wasted no time in the second frame, nabbing a goal at 14:21 prior to Claire Kim grabbing her first score just two minutes later. Bechard and Kim each contributed goals to add on to the team's largest scoring period, joined later in the frame by Cassidy Petrie with her first of four makes to push the score to 8-1. Langewisch tacked on two more points as the Vikings entered the break up nine.

The Vikings added four scores in the third period, beginning with back-to-back makes from Kim to secure her hat trick. Narita Lambert scored at 3:14 to increase the Augie lead to 12 before Petrie made a successful shot with just over a minute remaining in the third. In the final period, Langewisch scored a woman-up goal off an assist from Bechard for her final tally of the game. The Vikings added three more scores in the quarter to complete the rout, with Bechard grabbing one and Petrie adding two.

Langewisch had five scores to lead the Vikings' scoring attack, while Kim, Painter, and Petrie each had four. Augie caused 24 turnovers, paced by Bechard with five. The Vikings grabbed 20 ground balls as a team, with Kayla Ohm nabbing four. In net, Rachel Forman secured 10 saves in 60 minutes of action.

The 17-point win for Augustana is their largest margin of victory since April 2019.

The Vikings improve to 3-2 on the season with the victory. The team will face the Marian Sabres for their final home game of a five-game stretch on Saturday, March 25. Start time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. from Thorson-Lucken Field.
