Softball splits doubleheader at St. Ambrose

DAVENPORT, Iowa -- The Augustana Vikings softball team split a road doubleheader on Wednesday, falling to the St. Ambrose Fighting Bees by a score of 13-2 before winning the finale 5-2.

After a scoreless first inning both ways, the Bees got on the board first with three runs in their half of the second. Augustana responded with one in the top of third. seeing an RBI single from Ashlyn Mathers to bring the deficit to just two. St. Ambrose broke things open in the bottom of the frame putting up a 10 spot on four hits and two Augie errors.

Kennedy Williams was responsible for the game's final run, bringing in a score on an RBI fielder's choice.

St. Ambrose out-hit Augustana 9-6 in game one, with the Vikings led by two hits from Olivia Blood.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Vikings wasted no time with three runs in their opening at-bat. With two outs and just one runner on, Mathers and Morgan Bielfeldt notched consecutive run-producing hits to give Augie a 2-0 advantage. An error from the Bees two batters later gave the Vikings the early 3-0 lead.

The two teams went scoreless in the second, followed by Augustana stretching their margin to four in the top of the third on another error from the home squad. St. Ambrose earned the score right back in their half of the inning, making the score 4-1 in favor of the Vikings heading into the fourth. Once more, the two teams traded runs in the frame, with Augie seeing theirs come from the Bees' third error of the contest. Ranieri shut down the Bees in the final two innings to wrap up the complete game, striking out eight batters along the way.

Augustana out-hit St. Ambrose 8-6 in the finale, led by two hits apiece from Mathers, Bielfeldt, and Claudia Buchholz. Bielfeldt also accounted for two runs and two RBI.

With the results, the Vikings now sit at 6-6 on the season. The team will be back in action on Sunday, March 26 for two games at Hanover.
