WAUKESHA, Wis. -- The Augustana Vikings men's basketball team was defeated on Saturday by the Carroll Pioneers, falling by a score of 85-66 on the road.
The two teams played an evenly-matched contest for the first 13 minutes of action, each posting 18 points apiece with neither eclipsing a lead of more than four. Over the course of the next three minutes, the Pioneers broke away from the deadlock, owning an advantage of as many as eight before the Vikings cut it to four in the final seconds of the frame. A last-second shot for Carroll went through to bring the score to 38-32 in favor of the home team after 20 minutes of action. Augie endured 50 percent shooting from Carroll in the first half, but saw double-digit efforts from both
Tyler Knuth and
Matt Hawkins to remain within striking distance. Both teams hit 5-10 from behind the arc.
After falling behind by nine, the Vikings made a run to cut it to just one point at 41-40, but were unable to tie or reclaim a lead as the Pioneers answered with a 16-5 run to push the margin out its largest of the game at 12 points. Carroll was fueled by efficient three-point shooting, hitting 16-29 in the game and 11-19 in the second half alone. The lead for the home team never dipped below double digits.
Three Vikings finished in double figures, led by Knuth's 18-point effort. Hawkins added 16 points, while
Chase Larsen had 13 points and eight rebounds.
With the loss, Augustana drops to 7-16 overall and 5-9 in the CCIW. The team will remain on the road for the next contest on Wednesday, February 15 when they visit the Elmhurst Bluejays. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
