ELMHURST, Ill. -- Paige Bingen's goal in the 89th minute broke a scoreless tie on Wednesday night to lift the Augustana Vikings women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over the Elmhurst Bluejays, moving the team's unbeaten streak to 12 games.
The two teams did not see many opportunities at the net in the first half, with Elmhurst holding a 3-1 advantage in the shots category after 45 minutes of action. The Bluejays notched the first three shots of the game before
Liesl Whitener's strike right before the half missed out left. Just one of the Bluejays' attempts in the opening frame was on target, resulting in a team save from Augie.
Both squads saw more chances in the second half, with the Vikings plus-one in shots at 4-3. Half of the team's looks were saved by the Bluejays, but with less than two minutes to go,
Jordyn Swanson drove a pass up the middle to Bingen, who then sent into the goal for the first and only score of the game. The Vikings fended off one last push from the Bluejays to collect their fourth consecutive shutout. The score for Bingen is her first as a member of Augustana.
With the victory, Augie moves to 10-1-3 overall and 3-0-2 in CCIW action. The team will step out of conference for their next contest on Saturday, October 14 when they visit Grinnell.
