ROCK ISLAND, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings women's soccer team picked up a win in their first home game of the season on Wednesday, defeating the visiting Benedictine Eagles by a score of 2-0 at Thorson-Lucken Field.
The Vikings saw goals in each of the two halves, with the first coming in the 38th minute from
Kayla Garcia off of a pass from
Abby DeGustino. Augie led 1-0 after 45 minutes of action. They out-shot the Eagles 13-4 in the opening half.
Augie continued the offensive pressure in the second half, tallying eight more to Benedictine's five. The Vikings added onto their lead less than four minutes in as
Liesl Whitener took a touch pass from Garcia into the left side of the net to give the Vikings a 2-0 advantage. The two-score lead held all the way through the end, giving Augie a win in their home opener.
Eight of the Eagles' nine shots in the game were on target, giving Augie goalkeeper
Janey Castoe eight saves on the night as she and the team completed the shutout. On offense, Garcia tallied nine total shots, four of which were on goal. As a team, the Vikings finished with 21 shots and seven on target. Whitener had the other two strikes on the mark, with
Kim Vulic grabbing the other.
Maeve Sheridan also added four shots.
With the win, Augustana improves to 2-1 on the season. The Vikings will remain home for their next contest on Saturday, September 10 against the Trine Thunder. It will be Senior Day for Augie, with kickoff scheduled for noon. The senior recognition ceremony will take place prior to the start of the game.
