ROCK ISLAND, Ill. -- Bjarki Stole's penalty score in the 87th equalized the game to help the Augie men's soccer team earn a 2-2 draw with the visiting Coe Kohawks on Sunday night at Thorson-Lucken Field.
The Kohawks scored the first half's first and only goal just 12 minutes in to give the visitors a 1-0 lead at halftime. Augie saw multiple chances in the first half to tie the game up, but missed a few shots down near the net and found themselves trailing after 45 minutes of play.
Augustana got on the scoreboard 12 minutes into the second half as Neyel Boutkhorst took a pass from Evan Wheeler and sent it into the back of the net to make it a 1-1 game. Less than two minutes later, Coe earned the score right back as an unassisted goal from the side of the net went into the far side to put the Kohawks back in front. The Vikings continued to see multiple opportunities, out-shooting their opponent by four shots in each half.
With less than three minutes remaining, an aggressive Vikings offense took advantage of a Coe handball in the box, setting up a penalty kick for Stole, who sent into the net to make it a 2-2 contest. The Kohawks put up a few shots down the stretch, but Augie fended off the scoring threats as the clock ran out with each team sitting with the two goals.
Augustana finished the game with 19 shots to Coe's 11, led by four from
Ben Statz and three from
Jackson Binder.
Benjamin Samuelson snagged seven saves in net.
With the draw, Augie's record now sits at 0-1-1 on the year. The team will be back in action on Thursday, September 8 for their first road matchup of the season against the Rockford Regents. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. from Rockford, Ill.
