STERLING, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings women's tennis team found themselves back in the win column on Sunday, defeating the visiting Carroll Pioneers at Westwood Tennis Center by a score of 8-1.
Augie took two of three doubles matches to begin the match to bring a 2-1 lead into singles play. The Pioneers grabbed a win at the No. 1 doubles slots, but the teams of
Caitlyn Hanulikova/
Lauren Oda at No. 2 and
Natasha Gauerke/
Maddy Harned at No. 3 cruised to 8-1, 8-0 wins for the Vikings to give them the early advantage.
The Vikings went on to take all six matches in singles to run away with the 8-1 victory.
Lily Schoeck secured a win at the top spot, defeating her opponent by a score of 6-2, 6-4, while Hanulikova and
Michaela Magee notched similar victories at the second and third positions.
Hannah Colbert made quick of her counterpart at No. 4, winning 6-1, 6-0. Gauerke and
Hattie Timerman rounded out the Vikings perfect singles effort with victories at No. 5 and 6.
"We played such a great match today as a team," said head coach
David DeSimone. "It was an excellent bounce-back win."
The Vikings will be back in action September 30-October 2 at the ITA Regional Championships in St. Louis, Mo.
