ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings women's soccer team made it two straight wins on Wednesday as they wrapped up their four-game home stand with a 2-1 win over the visiting Simpson Storm.
Augie got on the board first in the 12th minute of action as
Kayla Garcia sent in her fifth goal of the season off of a pass from
Carson Kekelik. The 1-0 advantage for the Vikings held for less than 20 minutes until they added an insurance goal to make it 2-0 before halftime.
Samira Khobdeh was responsible for the Vikings' second goal, placing the ball in the far side of the net off of her own corner kick. The Vikings led 2-0 after 45 minutes of action despite being out-shot 13-3 in the first half.
Janey Castoe tallied seven of her 10 saves in the opening frame.
The Storm continued to pour on the pressure, outperforming her first-half shot total with 14 in the second half. In the 61st minute, Simpson benefited from their aggressive attack, capitalizing on a penalty inside the box to cut the margin in half. Simpson was unable to find the equalizing goal despite multiple opportunities and a final shot differential of 27-6. Castoe's 10 saves is a career high.
Kim Vulic led the Vikings with two shots, both of which were on target.
With the win, Augie improves to 4-2 on the year. The team will be back in action on Saturday, September 17 when they travel to Appleton, Wis. to take on the Lawrence Vikings.
