ROCK ISLAND, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings women's soccer team found themselves back in the win column on Sunday, defeating the visiting Monmouth Fighting Scots at home by a score of 4-1.
Liesl Whitener put the Vikings on the board early on, sending one in from the right side of the net unassisted for the game's first goal less than three minutes in. The game went 20 minutes without a score after that until the Vikings strung together three more over a span of six minutes. In the 23rd minute,
Kayla Garcia tallied the first of two goals on the day, taking a pass from
Lexi Dominguez to make it 2-0 in favor of the Vikings. Less than six minutes later,
Maeve Sheridan connected on her first goal of the season on an assist from Garcia, followed by another score from Garcia just 44 seconds later. Monmouth put in a penalty kick in the 42nd minute to make it a 4-1 halftime lead for Augie.
The offenses slowed down in the second half as the Scots posted three shots in the final 45 minutes to the Vikings' two. Augustana ended the contest with a 14-6 shot differential over Monmouth. Half of the Vikings' shots were on target.
Whitener and Garcia led the team with four shots apiece, followed by two from
Kim Vulic.
Anjelica Ortiz stopped two saves in net for Augustana.
With the win, the Vikings improve to 3-2 on the season. The team will be back in action at home on Wednesday, September 14 when they host the Simpson Storm. Start time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. from Thorson-Lucken Field.
