ROCK ISLAND, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings men's tennis picked up their first conference win of the season on Sunday, defeating the visiting Carroll Pioneers by a score of 9-0 at the Lower Campus Courts on the campus of Augustana College.
The Vikings posted a perfect doubles slate win two 8-0 wins at No. 1 and 2 to go with a win by default at No. 3. Leonard Panosso and
Arthur Hermange grabbed the victory at the top position, while
Gabriel Luna and
Kyle Boudreau were triumphant in the other match.
In singles, the Vikings also saw a win by default at No. 6, leaving them just one away from a match win. The Pioneers were unable to get above two points in any set of the five singles matches played as Augie was led by a perfect 6-0, 6-0 win from Gustavo Fonntenelle at the No. 5 slot. The other four Vikings players all tallied at least one clean 6-0 set, with Hermange spearheading the way at No. 1 with a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
Deepak Vayara,
Timothee Philip, and
Jesse Dyer rounded out the other singles wins for Augustana.
"We played well today," said head coach
David DeSimone. "Coming back to get a decisive win after a tough loss is just what we needed."
With the win, Augie improves to 3-9 overall and 1-1 in CCIW play. The team will be back in action on Thursday, April 7 to take on Elmhurst on the road. Start time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
