Vikings boast season-best 20 goals in road win over Elmhurst

Hettiger and Cecilio scored five goals each

ELMHURST, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings women's lacrosse team posted their best offensive outing of the year on Wednesday as they defeated the Elmhurst Bluejays on the road by a score of 20-12.

A low-scoring opening period began with the home team getting on the board first. The Vikings took the lead after seeing two going into the back of the net as Kate Hettiger and Cassidy Petrie tallied consecutive scores, both off of passes from Margaret Cecilio.

The two teams traded a pair of goals to begin the second quarter to keep the one-point lead for Augie in tact at the moment. Augustana broke away shortly after with four straight scores, eventually making it seven for the quarter alone. Petirie, Hettiger, and Cecilio all had two in the frame to help bring the score to 9-4 heading into halftime.

Augustana continued to pull away in the third, securing a plus-two margin over the course of the next 15 minutes. Cecilio got the scoring going two minutes into the period, followed by Sinclaire Lucero's second of the contest to counter a goal from the Bluejays. Claire Kim found herself in the scoring column later on, tallying back-to-back goals in the middle of a 5-0 scoring run that cushioned the Vikings' advantage to nine early on in the fourth. Augie outscored Elmhurst 6-5 in the final quarter, fueled by two more scores from Hettiger to help close out the eight-point victory.

Hettiger and Cecilio both notched five goals apiece to lead the offensive outburst for Augustana, Petrie was next in line with four scores, followed by three from Kim. Cecilio also tallied four of the team's seven assists. Rachel Forman earned the win in net, stopping six Elmhurst shots on the night.

With the win, Augie improves to 4-8 overall and 1-4 in CCIW play. The team will round out the 2022 season on Saturday, April 30 when they visit the Carroll Pioneers. Start time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. from Waukesha, Wis.
