CHICAGO, Ill. – Augustana baseball (22-8, 7-5) battled their Viking counterparts from North Park University (10-20, 4-8) into extra innings this evening. Augie survived North Park's comeback attempt by scoring five runs in the top of the 10
th inning to capture the 16-11 victory.
Augie started the scoring with an explosive fourth frame. The Vikings plated eight runs on just two hits by
Alec McGinnis and
Alex Simon. Griiffen Pschigoda and
Michael Gattuso walked in runs during the fourth inning while
Jacob Barker scored on an error and
Zachary Vrbancic delivered a sacrifice fly.
North Park began their rally in the home half of the fifth inning with a big frame of their own. NPU scored six runs on a trio of base hits to cut the Augie lead to just two runs. North Park continued with three more runs in the sixth inning and another in the seventh to take their first lead of the game.
Augustana bounced back to tie the game in the eighth when
Matt Ozanic scored on a wild pitch and regained the advantage in the ninth on a sacrifice bunt by Barker. North Park forced extra innings in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI triple to tie the game at 11 runs each.
The visiting Vikings then erupted in the first half inning of extras. Ozanic came home on a passed ball to score the go-ahead run. Augie continued with an RBI walk by
Jaden Dellitt, a Vrbancic single, and two more walks by Simon and Ozanic. The five-run 10
th gave Augustana the 16-11 win, their seventh in conference play.
Alec McGinnis went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and another driven in. Vrbancic also recorded two hits while four other Vikings scored multiple runs.
Alex Simon's three RBI lead Augie in that category.
Addison Southwick came on in relief for Augustana and earned his second victory of the year. Southwick tossed the final four innings while striking out eight and allowing just two hits and one run.
Augustana will continue their march towards the postseason tomorrow night with a non-conference road game. The Vikings will visit Rockford University for a 5:00 P.M. contest on Tuesday, Apr. 26.
