Offense shines early in 10-6 non-conference win at Rockford

Maifield crushes grand slam, drives in six RBI in victory

LOVES PARK, Ill. – Augustana baseball (23-8) won their second game in as many days in a 10-6 victory at Rockford University (11-13). The Vikings put six runs on the board in the first two innings and sustained their lead the entire game to earn the victory.

Augustana plated five runs in top of the first inning to grab the lead. Chase Maifield started the scoring with a grand slam home run before Alec McGinnis scored on a Rockford fielding error. Augustana plated another run in the second inning when Jacob Barker was driven in by Kyle Campbell.

The Regents managed three runs in the home half of the third inning but surrendered four more in the sixth and seventh innings. The Vikings' second flurry of runs started when Barker scored on another Rockford error before Maifield drove in two more on an RBI double. Campbell then singled Alex Simon home to score the Vikings' final run of the game.

Rockford did their best to rally in the bottom of the ninth scoring three runs on a pair of singles but could not sustain the rally and came up short, 10-6.

Chase Maifield led the Augie offense going 3-for-4 with a run scored and six RBI. Campbell also recorded three hits in as many at bats with a pair of walks and two RBI. Alex Simon scored three runs to lead all players.

Augustana starter Nathaniel Sammer pitched five full innings and earned his third win of the season. Sammer struck out six Regents while allowing three hits and three runs.

The Vikings will return to Moline for their contest. Augustana will battle rival Illinois Wesleyan on Friday, Apr. 29 for a Senior Day double-header.
