Balanced attack leads Vikings to double-digit win over Firebirds

VIkings scored the first seven goals in the contest

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. -- Nine different players for the No. 9 ranked Augustana Vikings women's water polo team tallied at least one goal on Saturday as the Vikings picked up a home victory over the visiting Carthage Firebirds by a score of 16-5 from inside Anne Greve Lund Natatorium.

Augie secured the first seven goals of the game, including five in the second quarter alone on their way to a 7-0 halftime advantage. Annie Opal Dickson scored the first a little over three minutes in, grabbing three of the first four overall for the Vikings. Olivia Hillhouse, the reigning CWPA DIII Player and Rookie of the Week, also pushed across two goals in the opening half.

Carthage found themselves on the board for the first time with the first point of the second half. The two teams traded scores in the third quarter and played to an even 3-3 tie in the period alone. The Vikings had their best offensive quarter in the fourth to extend their lead, seeing scores from six different players as they posted a plus-four advantage in the frame to close things out with a 16-5 final score. Dickson notched a score in each of the final two quarters to give her a game-high five goals on the day, which is a season-best.

Three others secured double-digit score games for Augustana as Hillhouse, Jillian Hagmann, and Charlotte Newport all collected two goals apiece. Victoria Guest also added four assists to help fuel the offensive efforts. On the defensive end, Lizzie Pelzman secured five saves without allowing a goal during her time in net, while Hillhouse swiped a team-best four steals.

With the win, Augie improves to 4-10 on the year. The Vikings will be back in action April 9-10 for their final regular season contests of the season as they take on four teams up in Kenosha, Wis. Augustana will face Wittenberg and Macalester at 12:30 and 7:00 p.m. on Saturday to begin the weekend.
