Box Score 4 KENOSHA, Wis. -- The Augustana Vikings women's water polo team concluded their final regular season tournament of the season over the weekend, picking up three wins against fellow Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) teams on the campus of Carthage College. Augie defeated Wittenberg 15-11 and Macalester 13-8 on Saturday, before falling to Austin 18-7 and defeating Carthage 19-7 on Sunday.
Game One (W 15-11 vs. Wittenberg)
In their first match of the weekend, the Vikings defeated the Tigers of Wittenberg by a score of 15-11 for the second time this season.
Alyssa Fricker helped get the offense going in the opening quarter with two goals as the teams played to a 3-3 tied after eight minutes. Augie posted a slight one-goal advantage in the second as three more goals from Fricker fueled the Vikings to a five-goal period and a 8-7 lead at halftime.Â
Augustana had their best defensive quarter in the third, holding the Tigers to just one goal. Two scores from
Charlotte Newport allowed the Vikings to secure another positive margin in the quarter and cushioned their lead to three heading into the final frame. The Vikings won the fourth 4-3, seeing two goals from
Jillian Hagmann, to hang on for the four-point victory.
Fricker led the way with seven goals.
Game Two (W 13-8 vs. Macalester)
Augie slowly pulled away from the Scots in their second contest on Saturday, posting one-goal margins in each of the first three quarters.The Vikings led 6-4 at the halftime break, with five different players tallying a goal.
Olivia Hillhouse had two in the second and one in the third to fuel the balanced attack, while
Ocean Akau had all four of her team-high four goals come in the final two quarters. The Vikings doubled up the Scots in the fourth quarter to push their final margin to five points.
Joining Newport and Hillhouse in the scoring column was Fricker and
Annie Opal Dickson, who each added two goals. Newport and
Lauren Dickinson also had one. The Vikings finish the year 2-0 against both Wittenberg and Macalester.
Game Three (L 18-7 vs. Austin)
On Sunday, the Vikings took on the No. 6 ranked Austin Roos, who currently are the top-ranked team in the CWPA DIII league. Austin got out to a fast start and held a 9-3 at halftime. The third quarter presented a closer, back-and-forth eight minutes with the Roos posting just a one-goal margin, but were able to pull away for good with six goals in the fourth.
Hillhouse, Newport, and Fricker were the lone goal-scorers for the Vikings in this one, lead by Hillhouse's three. Austin took both games against Augustana this year, with the previous resulting in a 12-7 win in Springfield, Ohio.
Game Four (W 19-7 vs. Carthage)
The Vikings completed the season sweep of the Firebirds to close out their stay in Kenosha, knocking off the host team 19-7 for their second win over Carthage in as many weekends. Three different Vikings put one into the back of the net for the 3-2 first-quarter advantage. In the second, Augie pulled away, notching a 6-1 margin in the quarter alone. Fricker scored three in the frame to help give the Vikings a 9-3 lead at the break.
Augustana continued to add on to their advantage in the third quarter, securing five goals from four different players to cushion the differential and take a 14-5 lead into the final quarter. Five more scores closed out the game for the Vikings as they coasted to the finish line to secure their highest scoring total of the season.Â
A total of nine Vikings grabbed at least one goal in the win, with five collecting multi-score performances. Fricker led the way with seven.
With the weekend's results, Augustana now sits 7-11 overall and are 6-2 against fellow league opponents this year. The CWPA has released their seeds for the upcoming DIII Championships, with Augie grabbing the second seed in the west. Austin will be the one, followed by Augustana, Macalester, Wittenberg, and Carthage. Matchups will be released at a later date, with the tournament to begin on Thursday, April 21 in Grove City, Pa.
