Men's tennis secures hard-fought home win over Illinois Wesleyan

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings men's tennis team picked up a home win on Saturday over the Illinois Wesleyan Titans, coming back from an early deficit to secure the 6-3 victory at the Lower Campus Courts on the campus of Augustana College.

The Titans took two of three doubles to begin the match, winning at No. 1 and 2 by identical 8-7 (4) scores. Augustana salvaged a point from Justin Cassens and Nicolas Navarro at No. 3 with a final of 8-1 as the Titans led 2-1 heading into singles.

Half of the singles contest went three sets as the Vikings picked up five wins to secure the 6-3 match victory. Augustana was triumphant in all three of the matches that did not go to a third set, securing wins from Deepak Vayara at No. 3, Eliot Saint-Paul at No. 5, and Cassens at No. 6.  Leonardo Panosso earned the match-clinching victory for the Vikings at the No. 2 spot, coming back from a set one loss to win the final two with scores of 6-1, 6-4. Arthur Hermange was the other winner for Augie at No. 1, also coming back from a first-set defeat.

"It was good to see the way we responded in singles after a tough start in doubles," said head coach David DeSimone. "There were many close matches that we battled through to secure a good team win."

With the victory, Augustana improves to 4-11 overall and 2-3 in conference play. The team will be back in action on Tuesday, April 19 when they visit the Elmhurst Bluejays in a rescheduled contest. Start time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. from Elmhurst, Ill.
