ELMHURST, Ill. – Augustana baseball (20-6, 5-3) came back from an early deficit with a four-run ninth inning to earn a road victory over Elmhurst (9-15, 2-7). The Viking victory was their 20
th of the season and completed the regular season sweep over Elmhurst.
The Bluejays jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after scoring in the first two innings. Paul Fomby started the scoring with a solo shot home run in the first while Trevor Lorek delivered a two-RBI double in the second.
Augustana came back to tie the game in the third when
Chase Maifield was hit by a pitch and
Alec McGinnis walked in a run.
Zachary Vrbancic singled in the game tying run before
Brett Benedetti drove one in during the fourth stanza to give Augie their first lead of the day.
Both teams then traded scores as Freddie March walked a run in to knot the score in the fifth inning and
Matt Ozanic singled one home in the sixth.
Lorek came through again to tie the game at five with a RBI walk in the eighth, but Augustana shut the door in the ninth.
Griffen Pschigoda scored on a wild pitch before
Kyle Campbell singled to score two more. Later in the frame, Ozanic scampered home on a wild pitch to score the final run of the 9-5 ballgame.
Four Augie batters recorded multiple hits led by
Matt Ozanic's 3-for-4 day. Campbell topped the Vikings with two runs batted in.
Addison Southwick earned the win on the mound in 1.2 innings of relief while striking out three Bluejays and giving up just one hit.
The Vikings will return to the Quad Cities to start a four-game homestand with a matchup versus North Park on Tuesday, Apr. 19.
