MOLINE, Ill. – Augustana baseball (19-6, 4-3) split a pair of Friday afternoon contests against the Big Blue of Millikin (16-12, 3-6). The Vikings took the opening matchup before Millikin completed the day with a road win.
The Vikings came back from an early 2-0 deficit to earn the victory in the first game of the day. Millikin got on the board in the first inning on a double and a single. Both sides then traded runs in the second, third, and fourth innings.
Brett Benedetti scampered home on a wild pitch in the second to start Augie's scoring before
Zachary Vrbancic smashed a two-run homer in the fourth. Vrbancic's dinger knotted the game at 3-3.
In the fifth inning, Frank Bryan delivered another base hit, his second of the game, to drive in the Big Blue's fourth run to take the lead.
Chase Maifield then tied the game again on a sacrifice fly to score
Matt Ozanic. The Vikings continued in the sixth frame with a three-run triple by
Kyle Campbell, a Benedetti single, and a Maifield double. Millikin managed their final run in the ninth but could not climb any closer as Augie took the win.
Campbell and Benedetti led the Vikings' offensive efforts with four combined hits, four combined RBI, and three combined runs.
Bryce Luckey earned the win on the rubber in four innings of relief work. Luckey struck out four while allowing three hits and three walks.
The second game of the day was controlled by the visitors as the Vikings failed to pick up where they left off. Garrett Fritz walked in a run in the third inning to start the scoring. Kyle Gibson then scored on a passed ball to widen the gap in the fifth. Tyler Gade put the Big Blue up 3-0 in the seventh inning on a RBI single.
Jacob Barker sacrificed Vrbancic home in the Vikings' half of the seventh inning, but Augie could not keep their rally alive. Bryan and Gibson delivered the final blows in the eight with a solo shot home run and a RBI single, respectively.
Campbell had another solid outing at the dish in Game 2 going 2-for-4.
Josh Wintroub suffered his first loss of the season going six inning and striking out five in the loss.
Augustana will take on Elmhurst in their next contest. The Vikings and Bluejays will finish their season series on Saturday, Apr. 16 at 2:00 P.M. in Elmhurst.
