Illinois Wesleyan takes down Viking men in CCIW tilt

Vikings fall 20-7

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Illinois Wesleyan (8-4) remained unbeaten in conference play tonight after beating Augustana (8-4) in Rock Island. The Vikings struggled to keep pace with the Titans' prolific offense as IWU outscored Augie 20-7.

Illinois Wesleyan jumped out to a 6-0 lead across the first 18 minutes including a 4-0 first period. Augustana finally got on the board with just under eight minutes to play in the second on an Elijah Graesser strike. After another IWU goal, Mark Teschke was assisted by Carson Ghys to cut the Titan lead. IWU struck once more before the break and took an 8-2 lead into halftime.

The visitors resumed their offensive display after the halftime hiatus with two goals to start the third quarter. Sam Shaver found the net with just under four minutes to play in the third to cut the deficit to 10-3.

As the game progressed into the later stages, tempers began to flare. Both sides received multiple penalties and capitalized on several. Augustana scored a trio of goals in a man-up situation as Bob Robertson, Matt Pierson, and Ghys delivered. With under two minutes to play, Jack Connolly scored the final tally of the game to reach the 20-7 final score.

Mark Teschke led the Vikings' offensive efforts with five shots followed by Robertson's four. Matt Pierson collected 11 ground ball while causing seven Titan turnovers. Augie goalkeeper Cameron Duffy saved 16 shots while allowing 16 goals.

The Vikings will continue their conference slate on Saturday, Apr. 16 with a road trip to Carroll.
