Women's lacrosse defeated by Edgewood in home opener

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings women's lacrosse team was defeated on Wednesday night by the visiting Edgewood Eagles, falling in their home opener by a score of 12-9 from Thorsen-Lucken Field.

Following two scores in the first two minutes from the visitors, the Vikings evened the game with two of their own on back-to-back goals from Cassidy Petrie. The two teams traded a score after that, with Kate Hettiger grabbing Augie's third goal of the opening frame before the Eagles tallied one more with just over two minutes remaining. Edgewood led 4-3 heading into the second.

The game flipped into Edgewood's favor following a strong second quarter from the road team. After an equalizing goal from Augustana's Kyla Painter, the Eagles proceeded to score four unanswered to close out the half and take an 8-4 lead into the break. Edgewood's go-ahead goal came just 11 seconds after Painter's game-tying tally.

The Vikings got within two early on in the third with goals from Ella Randolph and Petrie, but the Eagles answered with two of their own to make it an even 2-2 showing in the third alone and bring a 10-6 margin into the final period. Edgewood pushed their lead to five within the first three minutes of the fourth quarter, but three straight scores from Augustana all within a minute of each other made it an 11-9 game with ten minutes remaining. The Vikings were unable to send in anything into the back of the net the rest of the way and the Eagles notched one more insurance goal at the four-minute mark to bring the final score to 12-9.

Petrie led Augie with three goals on 12 shots in the contest, followed by two scores from Painter and Margaret Cecilio. Sawyer Graham had 12 saves in net for the Vikings.

With the loss, Augustana drops to 0-2 on the season. The team will remain home for their next contest on Saturday, March 12 when they host the Wartburg Knights. Start time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. from Thorsen-Lucken Field.
