ROCK ISLAND, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings women's lacrosse team picked up their first win of the season on Saturday, defeating the visiting Wartburg Knights by a score of 12-10 at Thorson-Lucken Field.
Augie found themselves with a quick lead after grabbing three goals within the opening five minutes, seeing the first go in from
Kate Hettiger, followed by two from
Margaret Cecilio. The Knights inched closer and limited the damage, securing two scores to bring it to 3-2 after 15 minutes of action.
In the second, back-to-back goals from Cecilio pushed the Vikings' lead back out to three. Wartburg responded with one of their own, but was answered with two more from the Vikings as
Claire Kim sent one into the back of the net before Cecilio added her fifth of the half. The Knights closed the second quarter on a 3-0 spurt to make it 7-6 Augie's way at the break.
Wartburg continued their stretch of scoring to begin the third, rattling off four straight within the first ten minutes to bring their overall scoring run to 7-0 and grab their first lead of the game. Goals from
Kyla Painter and Kim to end the third cut the Knights' advantage to 10-9 entering the final period.
Augustana closed the game with five straight scores overall, three of which came in the fourth, while holding Wartburg scoreless for the final 20:10 of the contest. Less than two minutes into the final frame, Hettiger brought the Vikings back to even at 10-10. Cecilio notched the go-ahead and game-winning score at the 7:35 mark, followed by one more from Hettiger to give Augie the 12-10 victory.
The Vikings out-shot the Knights 38-20 in the contest and were plus-14 in the shots on goal category. Cecilio finished her afternoon with six goals, which is a career-high for the senior. Hettiger added three scores, the second time in three games she has had that this season.
With the win, Augie improves to 1-2 on the season. The team will be back in action on Saturday, March 19 when they take on Concordia-Chicago on the road. Start time is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. from River Forest, Ill.
