CHICAGO, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings men's tennis team earned its first win of the season on Saturday, defeating the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks on the road by a score of 5-4.
The Vikings found themselves in an early deficit after the Scarlet Hawks took two of three doubles matches to take a one-point lead heading into singles play.
Arthur Hermange and
Leonardo Panosso salvaged an important point at No. 1 doubles, defeating their opponent by a score of 8-3.
Hermange knotted up the match with the first win in singles at the No. 1 spot, taking it by a score of 6-2, 6-1. With three wins needed from either team to clinch the match, the Vikings earned hard-fought victories at the No. 2, 3, and 6 positions to secure four of six singles matches and grab the come-from-behind win.
Kyle Boudreau's 6-4, 6-3 triumph at No. 6 proved to be the match clincher, while Panosso and
Deepak Vayara tallied the other two victories for Augie.
"I'm proud of the way our men competed today," said head coach David DeSimone. "In singles, we played complete matches and supported each other well. That was fun to see and be a part of."
With the win, Augustana improves to 1-5 on the season. The team will be back in action Sunday, March 13 when they take on UW-Whitewater on the road. Start time is scheduled for noon from Whitewater, Wis.
