Softball drops games to UW-Eau Claire, Luther

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Augustana Vikings softball team suffered their first losses this week at THE Spring Games in Florida, falling on Friday to the UW-Eau Claire Blugolds and Luther Norse.

Game One (L 3-2 vs. UW-Eau Claire)

Nichole Nash got the Vikings on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the third inning to break a scoreless tie, but the Blugolds answered back with a three-spot in the fifth to put themselves in front. In the sixth, Nash sent a ball to right field for a one-out triple, bringing the tying run to the plate. Following a strikeout, Morgan Bielfeldt singled to bring in Nash and cut the deficit to just one. Bielfeldt moved into scoring position due to a walk to Nadia Ranieri, but both were stranded to keep the Blugolds in front. The Vikings managed to put the tying run on base in their final at-bat opportunity, but were unable to bring her in as UW-Eau Claire squeaked out the one-point victory.

The Blugolds outhit the Vikings 8-7 in the contest, with Augie being led by Nash's 3-3 effort at the plate. Sydney Ohrtmann also posted a multi-hit game after going 2-3. Ranieri received the loss on the mound despite striking out six in six innings of work.

Game Two (L 8-0 vs. Luther)

The Norse pushed three across in the opening inning to give them the early advantage in Augustana's second game of the day. The margin continued to grow while the Norse kept the Vikings off the scoreboard. Luther plated another run in the third and two runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings to end the game at that point.

Augie mustered just three hits in the contest, with all three coming from different members. Kennedy Williams, Josie Smith, and Ashlyn Mathers all tallied a single for the Vikings.

With the losses, Augustana drops to 11-4 overall and sees their seven-game winning streak come to end. The team will back in action tomorrow for their final two games of THE Spring Games when they take on No. 10 Tufts and Williams beginning at 9:00 a.m. CST.
