CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Augustana Vikings softball team split a pair of games on the final day of their spring break stay at THE Spring Games, falling in game one to the No. 10 ranked Tufts Jumbos 2-1 before defeating the Williams Ephs by a final of 8-6.
Game One (L 2-1 vs. Tufts)
The Vikings allowed just two runs on two hits to the No. 10 ranked Jumbos, but were unable to catch up after giving up both runs in the opening inning. Back-to-back errors with one away put two Tufts runners on and proceeded to come in on a two-run double to give the Jumbos the early lead.Â
Augie got one back in the top of the second on an
Ashlyn Mathers RBI double to cut the deficit in half, but neither team was able to muster any more runs the rest of the way and Tufts held on to the one-point victory. The Vikings out-hit the Jumbos 5-2, but went the final two innings without a baserunner. All five hits came from five different players.
Game Two (W 8-6 vs. Williams)
The final game of the week displayed more offense than they saw in the opening contest on Saturday. After falling behind 2-0 in the first, the Vikings flipped the script in their half of the third with a six spot. RBI singles from
Josie Smith and Morgan Beilfeldt tied the game for the time being and later were followed up with a two-run single from Mathers and two more off of an error that came off of the bat of
Claire Weeks.
Williams inched closer with one in the top of the fourth, but Augustana earned that run back plus one more in the bottom half thanks to an RBI double from
Nichole Nash and run-scoring single from
Erin Smith. The eight runs proved to be enough and the Vikings successfully fended off a late Ephs comeback to escape with the 8-6 win.
The Vikings posted nine hits in the contest compared to the Ephs' 11, seeing one from seven different members of the team. Mathers and
Sydney Ohrtmann led the way with two hits apiece at the plate.Â
With the results, Augustana now sits at 12-5 overall after going 6-3 at THE Spring Games this past week. The Vikings will begin CCIW play beginning on Saturday, April 2 when they take on the Carroll Pioneers in a doubleheader on the road. Start time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. from Waukesha, Wis.
