ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana men's lacrosse fell to 0-2 on the 2022 season after an 11-6 defeat to the Milwaukee School of Engineering. The Raiders took down Augie in their season debut and the Vikings' home opener.
Augustana started the scoring in the first period with a
Mark Teschke goal just three and a half minutes into the game. The Vikings' quick start was swiftly halted, though, with three unanswered Raider scores to end the quarter. Sam Thompson, Andrew Reed, and Liam Brown all found the back of the net.
The contest tightened even more in the second period with a pair of goals for each team. Augustana got scores from
Sam Shaver in a man up situation and
Jack Preston to knot the score at three apiece. MSOE countered with two more goals by Brown and Kyle Hedblom to take a 5-3 halftime lead.
After the break, Jerred Willhelm extended the Raider advantage to 6-3 with an early score in the third period. The Vikings bounced back, though, with three unanswered goals of their own from
Elijah Graesser,
Matt Pierson, and Shaver.
The 6-6 tie was the closest Augustana would get to regaining the lead in the game. From 2:04 until the end of the match, MSOE poured in five more goals to reach the 11-6 final tally.
Shaver's two goals led the Vikings' offensive attack.
Jack Preston and
Carson Ghys both recorded assists for the Vikings. In net,
Cameron Duffy took the loss with 16 saves to his credit.
MSOE's Brown scored three goals to lead the Raiders. Thompson followed with two goals and six other players had one. Hedblom recorded two assists. MSOE goalie Sean Finneran saved 11 shots in the Raider win.
Augustana will be seeking their first win of the year when they start a two-game road swing this weekend. The Vikings will visit Kalamazoo on Saturday, Mar. 5 at 11:00 A.M.
