KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Augustana men's lacrosse team (1-2) used consistent play and an explosive fourth period to earn their first win of the season. The Vikings netted six fourth-quarter goals to seal their 12-5 win on the road at Kalamazoo College.
The host Hornets got off to an excellent start in the match with four goals in the first period. Logan Gillis, Eli Routt, Cam VanGalder, and Vincent Tremonti all contributed to Kalamazoo's opening frame. The Vikings battled through the first period as well and kept the margin within reach with goals from
Bob Robertson and
Mark Teschke.
Augustana continued their consistent offensive effort in the second and saw improved defensive play. The Vikings got another two goals from
Matteo Uccelli and Teschke while keeping the Hornets off the scoreboard. The two second quarter goals knotted the score at 4-4 heading into halftime.
After the break, the Vikings began to dominate the contest. Teschke and Uccelli scored their third and second goals of the game, respectively to grab the Vikings' largest lead of the game. VanGalder finally came through with just over nine minutes remaining in the third in what would be the Hornets' final goal of the game.
The fourth period was completely owned by the Vikings.
Cameron Duffy and the Augie defense again held Kalamazoo scoreless while the offense exploded for six goals.
Carson Ghys found the back of the net three times in the period. Uccelli and Teschke continued their superb days with another goal each while
Brady Holtz delivered the final score with less than a minute to play.
In goal, Duffy earned the victory for the Vikings with eight total saves to his credit. Kalamazoo's keeper Dylan Wickey recorded 10 saves in the Hornets' loss.
Augustana lacrosse will return to action on Saturday, Mar. 12 in another road contest at University of Northwestern (Minn.).
