ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Augustana men's lacrosse team (3-2) earned their third-consecutive victory this evening in a 10-6 triumph over the University of Dubuque Spartans. The Vikings cruised to an early lead before Dubuque came back to challenge the hosts in the final quarter. Augustana made the necessary plays down the stretch to solidify the victory.
Dubuque drew first blood in the first quarter with the game's first score just 85 seconds into the game.
Mark Teschke knotted the score at one goal apiece for the Vikings before Nikolas Wortman regained the UD advantage roughly halfway through the first quarter.
The second and third periods were completely dominated by the Vikings. Augustana scored five goals in the second period including two from
Bob Robertson, two from
Mark Teschke, and one from
Carson Ghys. Teschke's third total goal came with under a minute to play in the period and gave Augustana a 6-2 lead at halftime.
The Vikings were not as offensively productive after the break but continued dominant defense in the third quarter. Robertson and Teschke added another goal each while the Spartans failed to find the net.
The fourth quarter saw a complete shift in momentum as UD charged back into contention. Christian Melton broke the Spartans' scoring drought less than a minute into the period to trim the Vikings' lead to 8-3. Tyler Phipps continued the comeback effort with a pair of goals midway through the quarter, one of which was assisted by Ben Farraday. Dubuque goalkeeper Ryan Gartner was pulled from the net in attempt to put more pressure on the Augie defense. Gartner came through with a goal to cut the deficit to just two goals.
Augustana weathered the Spartan rally and eventually delivered two goals in the final 90 second to secure the victory.
Mark Teschke's five goals led all players while Augustana's
Bob Robertson and UD's Phipps each recorded three. In goal,
Cameron Duffy earned the win for the Vikings with six goals allowed and a dozen saves.
Augie will continue the non-conference slate with another home matchup this weekend. The Vikings will host Marian on Saturday, Mar. 19 at 1:00 P.M.
