Game Recap: Women's Water Polo |

Augie edged by McKendree in inaugural home contest

Alyssa Fricker scored a season-high seven goals

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. -- Reigning CWPA Player of the Week scored a season-best seven goals on Saturday, but the Augustana Vikings women's water polo team came up just short to the visiting McKendree Bearcats, falling by a score of 10-9 in the program's first-ever home contest.

Following a McKendree (9-3) goal to start the game, Fricker equalized things back up just 14 seconds later on her way to three first-period scores. The Bearcats jumped out to a 4-2 advantage, but a late goal from the freshman brought the deficit to one after eight minutes of play.

The Bearcats scored the first goal of the second, but were followed up by consecutive Augie scores from Olivia Hillhouse and Jillian Hagmann to knot the match at 5-5. Fricker added one more in the quarter to give the Vikings a 6-5 lead at halftime. In the two teams' first meeting back in February, the Bearcats held a 10-2 first-half advantage.

The third quarter was a key momentum shifter as the visitors put up a 3-0 margin to turn the one-point halftime deficit into a two-point lead in their favor after three complete. McKendree added one more to start the fourth to push the score to 9-6, the largest lead from either team in the game. Augustana inched closer and cut it to one following two scores from Fricker, but a power-play counter from the Bearcats made it 10-8. Fricker added another at the 1:23 mark, but a late stop from McKendree allowed them to hang on with the one-point win.

In addition to her seven scores, Fricker also added four steals and three drawn exclusions. Hagmann had three assists to go with her one goal. In net, Lanie DaSilva and Lizzie Pelzman combined for 11 saves.

With the loss, Augie drops to 1-9 on the season. The team will have two weeks off before their next contest on Saturday, March 26. The Vikings will take on Macalester from from Springfield, Ohio at 4:00 p.m. CST.
