Women's soccer earns key conference win over Wheaton

Vulic's penalty kick in the 85th minute proved to be the game-winner

WHEATON, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings women's soccer team earned a key conference road win on Wednesday, defeating the Wheaton Thunder by a score of 2-1. It is Augie's first win over Wheaton since 2015.

The Vikings got on the board first as Molly Fank connected on a penalty kick to put Augustana up 1-0 less than 10 minutes into the opening half. The two teams saw equal opportunity throughout the first 45 minutes, with the Vikings holding a slight advantage in shots at 5-4. The 1-0 lead remained intact through halftime.

Wheaton evened the score with a successful penalty kick of their of their own in the 69th minute to bring the score to 1-1. The Thunder doubled up the Vikings in the second half in shots, 6-3, also posting an identical margin in the shots on goal category for the game. In the 86th minute, Augustana broke the tie when Kim Vulic converted another penalty kick, sending one by the the goalkeeper in the lower left corner of the net. The Vikings fended off an aggressive attack from the Thunder in the final minutes to escape with the one-goal victory.

Kayla Garcia led Augie in shots with three, followed by two from Vulic. Janey Castoe snagged five saves in net.

With the win, Augustana improves to 8-5-2 overall and 3-2-1 in the CCIW, also snapping an eight-game winless streak against the Thunder. The Vikings move into a three-way tie with Wheaton and Millikin for the No. 3 seed in the upcoming conference tournament. Augie will hit the road for their next contest on Saturday, October 19 when they visit the Carroll Pioneers. Start time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. from Waukesha, Wis.
